If it's tripping a lot of errors, or jsut outright hangs.then your BIOS settings may be too aggressive for either/or RAM and CPU timings. For the retesting, you can usually just run the individual tests that failed instead of running the full pass to save some time.
If it finds an error in a module, then you'll want to pull some sticks and retest them until you find the bad card and get it replaced. If you are able to burn a CD, you can download the ISO to make a bootable CD that runs memtest86 to test your memory chips to see if something fails.let it run for a few hours (maybe even overnight, depending on the speed that it runs) to be sure it makes a couple full passes. Sometimes the problem is actually configuration/heat related-ram timings may be too tight and it only mucks up when things heat up a bit (BIOS settings, usually tied into the overclocking/manual CPU/RAM settings).
It's rare, but could also be tied into the memory controller (this is usually fixed via a BIOS update). Often this is caused because of a driver not working properly (accessing a memory space already reserved for something else), or faulty memory chips.
